HALF OF ALL FISH CAUGHT IN THE NORTH SEA
ARE THROWN BACK OVERBOARD DEAD…
That’s almost a million tonnes of perfectly good fish being thrown away each year! Our fishermen hate it but are forced into it by EU Law.
It’s called “Discarding” but it’s an environmental crime and a senseless waste of good food. If you haven’t seen the footage, you can still catch it on the link below.

Whilst some of the catch are under sized or have little market value, most are discarded due to an over quota of fish because landing them is illegal. Fish being thrown away include cod, plaice, haddock, whiting and coley.
The International Council for the Exploration of the Seas calculate 60% are being discarded in the North Sea, the figure rising to more than 90% for young cod aged under 12 months.
Discards, created by destructive fishing techniques and ineffective fisheries policy, are a key contributor to the depletion of global fish stocks. Additionally, illegal fishing activities – by unregistered vessels, illegal gear usage, or fishing in resticted areas – also have a massive impact on mariine biodiversity, the livelihoods of fishermen, and the food security of some of the world’s poorest people.
